Founded by Vera and Jan Michalski, a couple with Swiss, Polish, Russian and Austrian roots, the Libella Group has developed since the 1980s around a range of different publishing houses that are united by the same high literary standards.
In France, Libella now comprises Buchet/Chastel, Phébus, Libretto, Les Cahiers dessinés and Delpire, as well as the Librairie Polonaise de Paris (Paris Polish Bookstore). Born in Switzerland, the group has also grown in Poland and now includes Éditions Noir sur Blanc and Favre in Lausanne, Oficyna Literacka / Noir sur Blanc in Warsaw and Wydawnictwo Literackie in Cracow.
In a publishing context of blockbuster mergers and acquisitions, as well as increasing financialization, Libella proudly asserts its total editorial independence and the diversity of its production: French and foreign literature; travel writing, essays, non-fiction and illustrated books. The focus is on quality: the quality of the writing, in particular. Creating a style, discovering and launching authors who are engaged with the world and whose standpoint respects universal cultural values, and accompanying them over the long term: those are Libella’s goals.
That author-driven policy is well-served by an impassioned, human-sized team that cares about preserving the craft of publishing and works together at a single site in the center of Paris.
While the group welcomes authors of today and tomorrow, it does not overlook those who contributed to its renown in the past. A bridge between French-speaking countries, Eastern European ones and the rest of the world with its promising horizons; as well as a link between the past and the present, the stream of Libella’s pages provides a springboard for unexpected and exceptional new talent, and promotes a lush and bountiful catalogue.
